Understanding El Claroscuro Films

Chiaroscuro is the way in which darkness makes us appreciate light. It is from this contrast that our storytelling style is born: revealing the light and, with it, the story that lives in every scene, every shot, every frame… Building a narrative and cinematic universe that brings meaning and depth to every project.

We are artists, technicians and film creatives with a deep appreciation for the art that communicates through the image: cinema, painting, light…

Creating audiovisual projects in the form of cinematic works where storytelling, technique, visual aesthetics and emotion come together so that each story transcends and is understood by the audience.

Using the language of cinema and visual narrative as essential tools. We integrate cinematographic and photographic techniques that allow us to construct solid, evocative and visually powerful narratives.

We are a small team, and therein lies our strength: we concentrate talent, work with agility and create with freedom. This allows us to engage more closely, more honestly and more deeply with every project, every idea and every emotion.

Turn your project into images that communicate

Telling your idea, story or message with images requires narrative and aesthetic skills. But we especially refer to the ability to turn a written idea or a literary script into a visual script, that is, into images that communicate and are not only beautiful. That’s where you need someone with experience and mastery of cinematographic and visual language(cinematography).

Chiaroscuro is a lighting technique initially used in classical painting. Through the contrast of light, shadows, and dark areas of the image, the volumes that make up the scene are revealed—or concealed—with greater or lesser intensity, according to their importance or prominence.

The artist creates a visual hierarchy through which they communicate with the viewers, creating contrasts, tension, harmony, and/or visual beauty. Chiaroscuro is more than just light and darkness; it’s writing with light, it’s storytelling.

Chiaroscuro is not shading

Chiaroscuro is a technique that, although it began in classical painting to bring the third dimension to the works of the time, it is also currently applied in visual arts such as drawing, photography, film, etc. Chiaroscuro should not be confused with“shading“, since chiaroscuro is much more than giving volume to objects. In fact, chiaroscuro is a technique that has a strong visual narrative component; storytelling.

Chiaroscuro, in essence, is a technique that uses light and dark to create attention. Showing the areas of most interest and leaving in the background the less significant areas of the image represented. All this in order to bring three-dimensionality to the image and make the viewer focus his attention on the details that the artist decides.

These are examples of artistic portraits that we have done in our studio and on location using the chiaroscuro technique.

We guide the viewer through the work

In reality, chiaroscuro is a perfect tool that allows us to “play” with the observer, and guide him in how he has to see and observe the work. With light, half-light and darkness, and with the intensities of one or the other, we are “telling” the eye of the observer the visual “path” to take. And in this way we control what they see, and how they see it.

The masters of chiaroscuro

Although there could be a few standard bearers, undoubtedly the main reference of chiaroscuro, with the permission of Leonardo Da Vinci and Rembrandt, is Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio, better known as Caravaggio. Italian painter who was a pioneer and standard bearer in the use of this technique in his works.

We highlight “The Vocation of St. Matthew“, undoubtedly a masterpiece of visual storytelling and dramatic use of light. It is, to a large extent, the greatest influence on cinematography today.

One of our main references is the Valencian painter José Benlliure Gil, who makes a spectacular use of chiaroscuro. We highlight from his work “The vision of the Colosseum”.

From Chiaroscuro Theory to Its Use in Cinema

Far from remaining a purely technical definition, chiaroscuro continues to be one of the foundations of cinematic language today. The way light and shadow shape atmospheres, guide the viewer’s eye, and convey meaning is essential in any contemporary audiovisual production. From this perspective, chiaroscuro becomes the creative principle that guides our work as a film production company in Spain focused on visual storytelling, where each project is developed with a coherent aesthetic and narrative intention, integrating direction, lighting, and mise-en-scène as a unified whole.

A cinematic photographer doesn’t just take photos. He creates images with a narrative. At EL CLAROSCURO FILMS, we approach cinematographic photography as a natural extension of film. We create images designed for movie posters, audiovisual projects, and works with their own distinct identity, where each photograph has a purpose, an atmosphere, and a visual language crafted with meticulous attention to detail.

We conduct photo shoots both in the studio and on location, tailoring our approach to each project and developing a solid visual concept from the initial idea through to the final execution. Art direction, lighting, framing, and composition all come together to create images that don’t just depict—they tell a story.

Our goal is clear: for each photograph to serve as a single frame capable of summarizing an entire story.

EL CLAROSCURO FILMS AND CINEMATOGRAPHY

We offer cinematography services throughout Spain, based in Valencia, Madrid, and Barcelona, working with production companies, brands, and creators who are looking for more than just an image: they’re looking for cinema in its purest form.

What is a CINEMATIC PHOTOGRAPHER?

A cinematic photographer is someone who understands photography as part of the language of cinema.

It’s not just about capturing an aesthetically pleasing image, but about constructing a visual universe capable of telling a story in a single frame. Light, framing, color, atmosphere, and art direction cease to be isolated elements and become narrative tools.

Unlike traditional photography, a cinematic photographer approaches each image with a clear intention: to convey emotion, establish context, and suggest a narrative. Every decision—from lighting to the choice of location or costumes—is guided by an overarching vision, as if each photograph were part of a film.

This approach is particularly relevant for the covers of audiovisual projects, movie posters, and promotional images, where a single photograph must capture the essence of an entire work.

Ultimately, a cinematic photographer doesn’t just create beautiful images, but images that tell a story, evoke emotions, and leave a lasting impression.

Cinematic photography within audiovisual production

The role of the cinematographic photographer is essential in any production that aims for a strong visual language. Beyond technique, cinematography shapes atmosphere, defines tone, and gives form to the narrative through light and composition. In our approach, the image is not an addition — it is part of the story from its very origin. That is why we integrate cinematography into a complete process of cinematographic audiovisual production in Spain, where every visual decision responds to a clear narrative intention.
