“Disclosure Day” is the title of the latest film by one of our leading—and favorite—film directors: Steven Spielberg.

We are drawn to Spielberg because his directing style can sometimes go unnoticed (which is not necessarily a bad thing), yet his cinema is unmistakably authored and deeply recognizable. And not only because Spielberg makes blockbuster films that fill theaters, but because he doesn’t just make cinema—he is cinema. Like Kubrick or Tarantino, he is a director from whom you can learn if you pay attention. And if you don’t, you still enjoy the cinematic language without even realizing it.

Too Much AMERICAN

It must be said that this film is quite American in every sense. At times, you even find yourself thinking, “this is too much.” But ultimately, there is a balance between that sense of American excess and quality filmmaking, which makes it work and remain watchable.

The Best and Worst of ‘Disclosure Day’

What strikes me about this film—though not in a positive way—is that the screenplay falls into a loop that, in my opinion, isn’t necessary, especially coming from Spielberg. I don’t want to spoil anyone, but let’s just say that a large part of the film revolves around “hunting” a character, and for some reason, that chase never really ends. It’s the kind of structure where, every time they reach the character’s location, he has already left, and the pursuit starts all over again. For me, that’s the weakest aspect of the film.

On the positive side, given that it’s Spielberg and science fiction, what could possibly go wrong? In the end, it’s a film whose theme feels very much of the moment. It’s well made, of course, with an interesting cast. It’s essentially a fairy tale, in a way. Personally, I feel it could have benefited from Edward Norton in a leading role—but then again, I tend to think Edward Norton would improve almost any film I like, simply by being in it.

CINEMATOGRAPHY OF “Disclosure Day”

From a cinematography standpoint, there are a couple of things worth highlighting. That said, visually speaking, it is not particularly groundbreaking. Of course, it is very well shot, but given the level of talent, crew, and budget involved, that is almost expected.

The film was shot mostly on analog film, using the Panavision Panaflex Millennium XL2 (35mm), alongside our beloved Sony Venice 2. The overall look of the film leans strongly into a classic analog cinema aesthetic, reminiscent of the “golden era” style often associated with filmmakers like Tarantino and Spielberg himself.

As mentioned, there are two main aspects I would highlight. First, the decision to shoot on analog film with Panavision. And second, the frequent use of compressed framing through long lenses. Spielberg moves the camera a lot—and very effectively—orbiting and semi-orbiting around certain elements and characters, but with the added nuance of using strong telephoto lenses. This compresses the image while giving it an impressive sense of grandeur and visual weight.

IMMERSIVE EXPERIENCE in IMAX

Although it was not shot in IMAX (70mm), the film can be experienced in IMAX theaters, as the 35mm footage has been upscaled to 70mm. As a result, the viewing experience is quite powerful.

We watched it at the iSense auditorium in the Bonaire shopping center in Aldaia (Valencia), and the sheer scale is truly impressive, which in turn enhances the immersive experience.

We would undoubtedly highlight the fantastic work—unsurprisingly—of John Williams, at 94 years old, leading yet another of his countless film scores. Watching him conduct the orchestra, seemingly from what appears to be a wheelchair, is genuinely inspiring, in the sense that age is not necessarily a barrier to talent or dedication (provided, of course, there is good health).

Beyond his age, from the very first note you can tell that John Williams is behind the music. It is unmistakable. Although, to be fair, given that this is a Spielberg film, the odds were always in favor of that being the case. In fact, this marks the 30th collaboration between the two.

Our Rating

On a scale from 0 to 10, we give it a solid 8. Because even if it’s not Spielberg at his absolute best, it is exactly the kind of cinema we want to see when we go to the theaters to watch a movie —popcorn or no popcorn. This movie is cinema. We like it, and even though it runs for 2.5 hours, it doesn’t feel heavy. The best part, without a doubt, is Spielberg himself.

We have worked as directors of photography and art directors in music videos of Mónica Naranjo as “Perdida” and “Doble Corazón”, we have been directors of photography and lighting in the TV channel Al Jazeera Channel and beIn Sports in Doha (Qatar), we have been cinematography teachers in film school, we have made commercials, TV programs (international, national and regional), music videos, films, short films, big events, etc…

Pre-Production

Pre-production means getting and preparing everything necessary for the project to be perfect, always taking into account the final objective, the production value, the narrative, the storytelling and the aesthetic aspect.

It is in this phase where we prepare and take care of details such as costumes, colors, make-up, lighting (both natural and artificial), props, art, location, staging, rehearsals, tests, etc…

The value of production

It is vitally important to take care of the production value, no matter how small the project is. Because this value is directly proportional to the narrative and visual quality of the final result. The production value is to give each detail its real and necessary value, and not the circumstantial or casual. Production value influences details as important as the perfect choice of locations, art, light, props, etc. No detail should be neglected. Because, as in everything, details make the difference.

Filming and Equipment

Of course we take care of, carry out and direct the shooting of your project following the narrative, aesthetic and visual path marked. Always with the technical and human equipment according and proportional to your project: that is, camera equipment, drones, lighting, sound, extras, models, props, art, etc…

We use professional cinematographic equipment to obtain technical and artistic quality. Including drones and also action cameras to obtain aquatic and/or sports shots. We are able to do projects destined for cinema (real 4K DCI for big screen), streaming platforms, etc. In fact, our regular camera(Sony FX6 Cinema Line) is approved to be used in projects for platforms like Netflix or Prime. In any case, we use the right technical equipment proportional to the size and purpose of your project.

Editing and Editing

Editing, film editing and post-production we do it all. We follow the line of your brand, company, fiction or story in everything related to aesthetics and narrative in editing. Such as typographies, colors of logos, claims, etc.

If your project requires it, we will consider adding extra services that enhance and upgrade your story. Such as original music, professional dubbing voices, etc.

Final Destination

Of course there are no limits as to the final destination or objective of any audiovisual project made by us. For example, you can take your finished project to websites, Youtube, Vimeo, cinemas, televisions, digital platforms, displays and screens at conferences, fairs, demonstrations, exhibitions…

We adapt the project to the necessary resolutions, codecs and color profiles so you can take it anywhere.

Delivery

We deliver the project according to your needs. But usually the delivery package includes:

• The project finished and optimized for its final target (Youtube, cinemas, digital platforms, TV, web, events, etc).
• Agreed deliveryformats (landscape, widescreen, etc.)
• Trailer and/or teaser of the main project (if applicable)
• Cover / film and art miniature adapted to delivery formats
• Photographs that we may have generated during the process (making-of, still photo, etc).

The final delivery is done digitally. We deliver the finished project (with the agreed revisions) packaged through a special secure, private and customized download web page for you. Or we deliver via download links from our WeTransfer Pro account.

And Beyond

And when the final project is delivered, we are still there with you even after all the audiovisual production of your project. Because it is possible that later on you may need a variation of the project, or a new copy with a different codec, resolution or format than the original.

A cinematographic video is that video (by definition it is the one recorded and processed with video equipment) to which a cinematographic treatment is applied. That is, it can be a video treated from the beginning, or only in parts (mostly in editing), as a film project, only recorded with video equipment.

What is a cinematic video?

In this video we help you, with examples, to understand the difference between the two concepts. Videos that can be turned into cinema, and purely cinematographic projects. Which is better? Both are valid, but the decision will depend on the purpose of each one.

Difference between video and film

The difference between video and film equipment is more than remarkable. Although today they are apparently more evenly matched, video equipment has always been very different from film equipment.

With the advent of digital cinema, the difference is smaller, but that does not mean it does not exist. A video camera of the 90s, for example the Sony Handycam, was nothing comparable to a film camera of the 8, 16 or 35mm era.

To begin with because they are two almost opposite worlds. The capture of light in film cameras was (there still are) chemical, and video cameras are electronic. An abysmal difference in every way. And of course there is also an abysmal difference in texture and image quality that both types of cameras offer.

Today, it could be said (being an outrage) that all digital cameras are “the same”. Since the camcorders used today, and the film cameras work “the same”. It is true that they all use electronic sensors to capture light and convert it into an electrical signal, but the secret, and the biggest difference is in the sensor, and in its size. Not to mention the type of processing of the signal obtained.

A video camera gives us directly the image ready to be visualized, while images from film cameras need a complex and specialized post-production treatment before being visualized in their final aspect.

Well, having said that, it is clear that shooting video is not the same as shooting film. The main differences are dynamic range and the ability of digital cinema to process the images during editing.

Example of a cinematic video

This video clip below is an example of what a cinematic video is. It was shot with video equipment. In fact we shot it with a “normal” video camera. Camera that we equipped with photographic lenses, but that gave us a “look” similar to the cinema. We also adjusted the necessary parameters so that it would record as much “cinema” as possible. Later, in editing, we have given it the touch with an image treatment that gives it that cinematic look. And this is the result:

In El Claroscuro Films we make films. All our works are digital cinema. That means that among other features:

• We use cinematographic equipment. As cinema lenses both anamorphic and spherical. And of course we use professional film cameras.
• We make choices, and use settings and resolutions in our equipment that are compatible with the projection of our projects on the big screen, on a cinema screen.
• We process the images to give them a more cinematic look and feel.
• We perform color grading to adjust the colorimetry of each shot to the project’s objective.
• We shoot the projects following the guidelines and mechanisms of film shoots.
• We treat the whole project (scripts, planning, pre-production, etc) as a film project needs. We even create the cover and miniature film of the project.

Cinema is not just fiction

Although it is obvious, it should be emphasized that cinema, the art of filmmaking, is not just fiction. Cinematographic films are surely the greatest standard of cinema, but not the only one. Therefore, we can make a cinematographic work without being exclusively fiction. A documentary can be cinema, what we call music video or corporate video can be cinema. For it to be cinema, it has to fulfill the steps we have mentioned in the previous list.

Color Grading and Color Grading

Film cameras record images in logarithmic, which means that the images have to be processed to obtain the desired final look. This requires the process of color grading and color grading. This means adjusting each shot of the project in terms of light and colorimetry, taking into account the psychology of color, the visual narrative, the final objective of the project and the desired aesthetic style.

For a spot to be effective, everything that appears on screen -every shot, every frame, every color- must be at the service of the message. We avoid distractions, reduce the superfluous and focus especially on cinematographic language and visual storytelling. Fundamental aspects for the story to be visually and narratively coherent.

We apply cinematographic techniques such as color psychology, narrative image composition or staging techniques. And we combine them with precise art direction, sound and photography, to get the message across clearly, without noise and with impact.

But it’s not just about image. We also take care of the sound design, music, dialogues, typography and all the elements that make an audiovisual piece breathe coherence. From script writing to post-production, everything is designed so that the whole speaks the same language and transmits the values of your brand.

A real case

Alhendín, a story told in chapters What if the storytelling of the spot lasted more than a minute in time? For the Longea company’s Alhendín retirement home, we took advantage of the potential of an advertising spot and divided it into short narrative pieces, with continuity between them.

Thus, instead of making a single spot, we proposed a narrative divided into four short but interconnected chapters, starring Matilde, a resident who acts as a common thread.

A story in advertising spots presented in chapters

Each chapter shows a different facet of life in the residence: in the first, Matilde introduces the main spaces and the people who live there; in the second, she delves into the kitchen and the personalized care of the diets; in the third, she walks with her friends through the green areas and participates in outdoor activities. The fourth episode, yet to be published, is the most emotional and will close the story.

More than advertising spots, they are a communication strategy.

This serial approach allows us to offer fresh content for several months, build audience loyalty, strengthen the emotional bond with the public and show the essence of the residence from different angles. It is a way of reinterpreting the advertising spot not as a closed piece, but as an expanding narrative.

This is how we understand the production of advertising spots: not as a one-time task, but as a strategic tool that can grow, evolve and adapt. A way to tell who you are with authenticity, beauty and purpose. Because it’s not just about being on screen. It’s about being remembered.

It is true that a picture is worth a thousand words, yes, but in the world of cinema, when the image alone fails to convey what we want, it is necessary to add new elements to help us. This is the case of the dialogues, the sounds that are not seen, and of course the music. Music is part of the script, it is another actor, it is an important and fundamental part of the narrative.

Where images do not reach

A quick and easy way to check this is to imagine a scene from a movie without music. You will see that although the image is very powerful, the scene does not transmit the same, and then, maybe you don’t feel fear, or peace or tension. Can you imagine Rose saying goodbye to Jack in Titanic without the music that James Horner composed for that scene?

In the world of cinema, unless it is a condition of the script, it is impossible to leave aside the music, the soundtrack. And that’s because when we tell a story, and as I said before, neither the story itself, nor the images are enough, you have to use other narrative elements, such as the soundtrack.

Original music in exchange for library music

Although in the world of cinema there is always a composer to create the soundtrack, it is very common to have to resort to library music for many of today’s audiovisual productions.

But of course, choosing music from a library is not the same as choosing original music created explicitly for a scene, sequence, shot or film.

Library music, even if it is very popular, is of high quality and fits your project, it is true that it will never have in its guts what music composed expressly for your project will have; a coherent musical narrative throughout the project. And that will transcend the screen, and will reach the viewers.

Josué Vergara, film music composer

Josué Vergara is an excellent Valencian film music composer. Among his achievements there are important awards in Hollywood, participation as composer in documentaries and important and successful films or being the composer of AER, the official anthem of the Air and Space Army. Together with him we are producing and directing AER(more information).
